Texas AAUP Fights for Faculty Rights: Standing Against Censorship

  • Mar 23

Faculty across Texas are currently facing unprecedented attempts to censor teaching, research, and public speech. To help educators navigate these challenges, the Texas AAUP has published a crucial update outlining our core protections and actionable steps to defend them.

The guidance highlights two fundamental protections for faculty:

  • Academic Freedom: Your Constitutional right to investigate, teach, and publish findings without administrative or political interference.

  • Due Process: The right to fair and consistent treatment in all employment matters, protecting you against arbitrary or politically motivated punishments.

To actively defend these rights, the Texas AAUP recommends standing firm against undocumented administrative pressures and demanding policy-based justifications in writing. Furthermore, faculty should report censorship attempts to organizations like FIRE and Texas AFT, organize with peers within their departments, and join the AAUP for solidarity and legal representation.
